Vanaf begin dit jaar heeft de stichting Sint Anthony Gasthuis geen guardiaan meer. Berend Ziengs is gestopt na een periode van bijna twintig jaar. Hij is de laatste guardiaan in de lijst die begon in het jaar 1800. Berend blikt tevreden terug: \u201cHet is mooi geweest.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bolsward heeft drie stichtingen: de Hendrick Nannes en Catrijn Epes, het Weeshuis en het Sint Anthony Gasthuis. Het Sint Anthoy Gasthuis is een hele oude stichting. Het gasthuis werd in de vijftiende eeuw gesticht. De stichting beheert landbouwgronden in de omgeving van Bolsward. Daarnaast beheert de stichting ook gebouwen en woningen. Deze woningen worden verhuurd aan huurders. Stichting Sint Anthony Gasthuis was de laatste Bolswarder stichting met nog een guardiaan in dienst. De letterlijke vertaling van de benaming guardiaan is een bewaker. \u201cDe titel alleen al vind ik mooi\u201d, glundert Berend. Hij vervolgt: \u201cDe titel komt uit het katholicisme. Heel vroeger was deze persoon een bewaker van een mannenklooster.\u201d Tijdens een rondleiding komt naar voren dat Berend veel weet over de rijke historie van de stichting en het gebouw en hier passievol over spreekt.<\/p>\n

Berend is in 1998 begonnen als guardiaan. De functie sprak hem aan, omdat hij graag met mensen omgaat. Daarnaast vindt hij het een prachtig gebouw met een mooie tuin. E\u00e9n van zijn taken was het mede advies geven over het onderhoud aan het bestuur. Verder verrichtte hij zelf veel kleine onderhoudstaken, zoals het verwisselen van een kapotte lamp of het recht hangen van een keukenkastje. Hierbij kwam Berend zijn technische opleiding goed van pas. \u201cGuardiaan is de titel, maar ik noem mezelf meer de huismeester\u201d, voegt hij toe.<\/p>\n

Het mooie aan zijn functie vond hij het helpen van de bewoners. Af en toe ging \u2019s nachts het alarm af. Berend sprong dan altijd direct in zijn kleren om te kijken wat er aan de hand was. \u201cEr was een prettige sfeer\u201d, aldus de voormalige bewaker. Trieste momenten waren er helaas ook. Zo vond Berend het altijd weer heftig als er een bewoner kwam te overlijden. Een ander dieptepunt was de inbraak in het hoofdgebouw. Een eeuwenoud gastenboek en een zilveren schaal verdwenen hierbij. In tegenstelling tot de zilveren schaal, is het gastenboek gelukkig weer teruggevonden.<\/p>\n

\u201cMijn tijd als guardiaan van stichting Sint Anthony Gasthuis beschouw ik als een waardevol onderdeel van mijn leven\u201d, besluit Berend. Nu is het tijd voor een nieuwe start. Hij kijkt ernaar uit om meer tijd door te brengen met zijn familie. Wel wil hij bezig blijven door bijvoorbeeld vrijwilligerswerk te doen.
\nDe werkzaamheden van Berend zijn overgenomen door Hoekstra Vastgoedbeheer in Leeuwarden. Dit bedrijf regelt ook de verhuur van de woningen van de stichting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
